Canadian-born rapper Drake, who is known as one of the most fair-weather fans in sports, apparently lost a $60,000 bet on Seth Curry and the Warriors winning the NBA Finals. The Cleveland Cavaliers ended up winning the series after making the biggest comeback in finals history, but the Warriors will have better online NBA sportsbook odds of winning the championship next season, according to Las Vegas sportsbooks.
Drake, who in all fairness was rooting for Toronto Raptors during the playoffs, has been ridiculed in the past for rooting for front runners. When the Kentucky Wildcats won the NCAA championship in 2012, Drake found his way into the locker room to celebrate with the champions, even though he had no allegiance to the team nor did he attend the school.
The same thing happened when the Miami Heat won the championship, Drake was courtside at most of their games, and even tried to get into the locker room after they won one of their two championships, but he was denied entrance by team security.
When the Warriors won the championship last year, most people were surprised Drake didn’t automatically become their biggest fan since he has a thing for winning teams. It was even more surprising not to see him at courtside during all their home games this year after the team’s record setting season.
Drake hasn’t kept his fandom strictly on the hardwood floors of basketball teams. Drake has also been seen on the tennis courts in recent years cheering Serena Williams on. Unlike the basketball situation, we aren’t entirely sure his trips to London for Wimbledon were strictly as a fan.
There have been reports that Drake and Williams dated for some time, although the reports have never been confirmed. So, Drake showing up to support Williams could have just been him trying to be a good boyfriend. Since we don’t know if the reports of them dating are true, were going to chuck it up as Drake just trying to be a super fan.
Despite all the jokes, you have to give Drake credit for being a big sports fan and enjoying the success of other people instead of hating on them like some people tend to do. He has also been a fan of the Raptors when they sucked so we know he doesn’t just root for successful teams.
However, since the video of him using a lint remover on his clothes while watching a Raptors game went viral, it is really hard not to make fun of him.
Back to the bet, according to reports, Drake made the $60,000 bet with fellow rapper French Montana that the Warriors will win game 7. Since he has referenced the Warriors players on his songs a few times and the Cavaliers defeated his Raptors in the Eastern Conference Finals, it made sense that he picked the Warriors.
Unfortunately, he underestimated the determination of LeBron James, and lost $60,000 in the process. On Monday, Montana thanked Drake for the cash on his Snapchat account.
“Shout-out to my brother Drizzy Drake for that 60 bands, cuz you ain’t believe in LeBron,” Montana said.
