It is possible for a female dog to come into heat twice a year? On the rare occasion a female may come into heat 3 times a year and the female is in heat for 21 days with one week on – one week off and back in heat the third week so in 21 days it is possible for her to become impregnated by multiple sires. Male dogs will come from far and near if they know there is a female in heat. In fact, they will know possibly before the dogs owners know.

Breeders can sometimes breed a dog too much and destroy their physical health. Puppies will be born abnormal, mothers cannot produce milk, these are two issues that come with over breeding either accidentally or purposely. Normally the female has her puppies and does fine but sometimes she can’t have them on her own, so she has to go to the vet for a cesarean section. This procedure comes with many difficulties such as the dog may hemorrhage from the uterine stump and she will not be able to take care of the puppies.

This is where a person has to step in and take care of them which is not an easy task. You are now a mother with newborns making formula feeding every one to two hours cleaning them – stimulating them so they pee and poop and keeping them warm on a heating pad and blankets. When they get 7 to 10 days, their eyes open and they are still blind and deaf, you have to teach them everything. It is a ton of work, so I say please help solve this matter by having your pets spayed and neutered. Together we can stop this problem of overbreeding.

**Note: Cyndi and Tonya Miller another Fur Babies volunteer, have had to step in and be surrogate Mom to several puppies, bottle feeding them and keeping them alive when Mom either could not or died after birth. It is a difficult job and they have spent a lot of sleepless nights keeping babies alive that otherwise would not have made it.
