Mike Nichols, legendary film director and husband of news journalist Diane Sawyer, died late Wednesday night. He was 83. His death was first reported by ABC News, and no cause of death has been given.
Nichols rose to fame as the director of such iconic films as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Graduate, Catch-22, Silkwood, and The Birdcage.
He was also successful on Broadway, directing the long-running productions of The Odd Couple and Barefoot in the Park, among many others,
He won many awards in his long long career, including an Oscar for The Graduate, and was among a very few to win the coveted EGOT, or an Emmy, a Grammy, and Oscar and a Tony award.
He was married to Sawyer for 26 years. He is also survived by his three children and four grandchildren.
