For decades, Styx band members—guitarist and vocals Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young, vocals and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan, drummer Todd Sucherman and bassist Ricky Phillips, along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist, Chuck Panozzo—have been a staple of rock music, with numerous hits and popular live shows. On Feb. 26, the iconic rockers are bringing that performance to The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.
Tickets start at $40 and go on sale Dec. 18.
Since releasing the self-titled 1972 debut “Styx,” the band has recorded 15 studio albums and released more than 30 singles.
The Chicago band’s breakthrough came in 1974 when a local radio station began playing “Lady” from “Styx II.” The song was then officially released as a single and quickly shot to the No. 6 spot on the singles chart.
Styx’s biggest success came in the second half of the 70s when guitarist Tommy Shaw joined the band and began contributing to songwriting. Shaw proved to be the missing piece to the puzzle for Styx, as most of their subsequent releases earned platinum certification.
From 1977 to 1981, the band released four consecutive albums that peaked in the Top 10 and produced such hit singles as “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself.”
With the release of “Paradise Theater” in 1981, the band made history as the first band to release four consecutive triple-platinum albums. The concept album sold more than three million copies and featured five singles, including “Too Much Time on My Hands” and “The Best of Times.”
The career-encompassing live album, “Caught in the Act,” was released in 1984 before the majority of the band members pursued solo projects throughout the remainder of the decade.
The band is currently on tour and introducing a new generation of fans to their chart-topping hits.
