I need to preface this list by saying that none of the below songs are bad. They are just songs that for the most part, I wouldn’t admit to loving unless someone had a gun to my head. Some indeed do emit a slight whiff of cheddar, but this does not diminish their greatness. My girlfriend, (who is a true aficionado of cheese-tastic music), is braver than I am and willingly admits (in public, no less) to loving most of these songs. You might just hear a few of these at our wedding…
10. Boy Meets Girl- “Waiting For a Star To Fall” 1988.
The best and worst of 80s pop crammed into a shiny, catchy package.
9. Tom Jones- “What’s New, Pussycat?” 1965.
T.J, an original King of Cheese, but lovable the world over. Hey, he posed in a pic with Muhammad Ali in the ring and actually looked like he could do some damage!
8. Ace of Base- “Lucky Love” (Acoustic Version) 1995.
Ok, I have had a crush on the blond singer since I was 11. Sue me.
7. Mariah Carey- “Without You” 1994.
See above, take out the blond part. A Badfinger song, then it became a Nilsson Schmilsson song, but Mariah does it best!
6. Ambrosia- “How Much I Feel” 1978.
Soulful, in a way that only a white guys from the 1970s can do.
5. Dio- “Rainbow in the Dark” 1983.
Like many of Dio’s songs, you must ask yourself: “What the hell is he talking about?” Still, it is a hell of a vocal by our man Ronnie James Dio. RIP.
4. Asia- “Heat of the Moment” 1982.
A hoaky but brilliant way to be a cheating bastard and make it into a song that stupid people dance to at their weddings…
3. Belinda Carlisle- “Heaven is a Place on Earth” 1987.
Former Go-Go’s lead singer goes Bon Jovi, and pulls it off!
2. Player- “Baby Come Back” 1977.
The song from the Swiffer commercial. No need to say anything else.
1. Corey Hart- ‘Sunglasses At Night” 1984.
If this song didn’t have the lyrics that it does, it wouldn’t be on this list. This is because it is killer otherwise.
Honorable Mentions:
Lil’ Kim feat. 50 Cent- “Magic Stick”- 2002
King Missile- “Detachable Penis”- 1992
