“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!” Although I know that no matter how hard I chant the name of everyone’s all time favorite ghost, Michael Keaton will not suddenly appear before me. But it certainly has never stopped me from trying.
In the past week there has been a lot of speculation and rumors circulating that a Beetlejuice II is in fact headed our way. Those fans whose heads actually didn’t explode, went on to learn that Keaton and Winona Ryder were totally on board and would be returning too. As if we weren’t excited enough already!
But, as with all stupendously amazing things, there’s bad news. In a statement given to MTV News, Burton’s rep confirms that the movie is not in development and that the director did not in fact provide a statement to confirm that. (Groan).
However, that doesn’t mean fans should give up on Beetlejuice II completely. Last year, Ryder told MTV News that she’s certainly emotionally prepared to return to the role of Lydia, the strange and peculiar girl she once brought to life. But emotionally is not the same thing as officially.
According to Ryder, Burton phoned her last October discussing the possibility and ended by saying, “I want to work on Lydia a little.” Again, these are all positive things, but there’s nothing official… yet. With the enormous positive feedback from die hard fans, Burton would be a fool not to.
