What up Fam! It’s DeShawn bringing you a review of one of my most played and favorite games, League of Legends. I have been playing this game for almost 5 years and I’m still one of its biggest fans. In short it’s a MOBA or multiplayer online battle arena. What the hell does that mean? Well it’s a group of players usually arranged in 5v5 teams where each team picks a character to play and has to work together to destroy the other teams base/structures. Each character has a set of unique abilities that impact the game in various ways. Now that you kind of have a rough idea of what a MOBA is I will get into the review.
Let’s start with what everyone always notices first, the look of the game. The art style has a cartoony built world with a darker gritty cast over all of it making a unique light-hearted battle field. With all the colorful champions and the lore of the rift I think it’s a perfect setting for the battle on “summons rift”. When it comes to champions the 120 different choices is as impressive as it is overwhelming. In the past 2 years or so it has been Riot’s (the company that owns the game) plan to make all the champions as unique as possible and I think they have done a good job with that. Personal feelings aside, the changing of old characters brings a healthy dose of vitality to the game and specifically to the champion that is updated.
With the exception of a few I love the all the champions in League of Legends, from the champion model to the lore of how they became who they are to the abilities they posses. You can really invest in a champion and I feel that is extremely important when it comes to character development and making a game immersive. Now let’s talk game play, the style of a basic MOBA is you control a character that has to destroy the opponent’s base. How this is done is by killing smaller non-player controlled characters that give a form of currency that allows you to buy items that make your character stronger so you can take out the opposing players and their structures.
There is a plethora of items to buy, which is a great problem to have, but in recent patches it has become kind of stale in what items you buy due to the fact of how strong these particular items have become; but these items will be changed, hopefully soon, to become more I line with other item choices. It’s a beautiful game that has a lot to offer in terms of immersion while you play. With plenty of champions to play to keep the game feeling new and enough items to match it’s a staple in the MOBA game line up. It’s not without its problems. Sometimes champions are so good they are frustratingly impossible to play against. There is a “meta” game that locks you into a smaller pool of champions to pick that are useful, which also affects the item choices. And the worst part about this game isn’t even the game itself; it’s the community that plays it. With it being such a widely played game there are definitely trolls that like to ruin the experience.
Overall I give this game a 8/10. For its overall look and feel, champion pool, and fluid game play. Its lacks in areas of balance which is hard to master in a game like this and the community can be overwhelmingly toxic at times.
Hope this review gave you some insight to one of my favorite games and hopefully I will see you on the rift!
