Every animal will be “bugged” by fleas at some point. Fleas are a nuisance to dogs, cats and humans. Fleas can be picked up in any yard, park, shelters and homes. They love grassy areas as well as carpeted floors. Fleas will get on animals as well as human’s, the bites cause dermatitis an itchy rash, but can do more.
Fleas can be much more dangerous if ingested. If the ingested flea is carrying the tapeworm eggs inside of them the animal will get infected with tape worms. The tapeworm attaches to the pets intestines, causing weight loss, vomiting and irritation.
We see a lot of dogs with tapeworms due to the fact they have not had preventative treatment. Once the dog is infected with tape worms, they can spread them to all other dogs using the same yard as they use. Then the expense of treating everyone is much more than the prevention would have cost.
An adult female flea can lay 5000 or more eggs during their lifetime which can be as short as one year. That rate of reproduction it easy to see why fleas are so common. They can be responsible for other illness in cats, dogs and humans, including anemia for the amount of blood loss caused by the fleas.
Treating your pet may not be enough, you yard will have fleas in it as well as your house. Spray for your yard as well as your house may be necessary. Fleas can live off of human blood as well as dogs or cats.
