What up fam! I’m coming at you today with what I thought of the 4 day open beta for blizzards new game title Overwatch. This game had me super hyped for the release and they opened the beta a day early so who ever was paying attention got an extra day of play! After a quick download from the blizzard client I was ready to play blizzards first shooter.
The opening cinematic was great! They did a really good job getting you into the lore and the environment right off the bat. At this point I’m about to explode with excitement and if I don’t get to play soon I may pass out. The training mode I felt was pretty good, slightly over informative but that’s just me being nitpicky. Running through the movements, skills, and shooting was a breeze and the atmosphere for the training area kept the integrity of the game intact.
With the training mode under my belt I’m feeling it and ready to log some hours on this beta! The game suggests playing a co-op vs. AI which I did and completely rofl-stomped the bots but this is always a false sense of skill because lets be real AI will never be as good as your friends. Well maybe. But now it’s time to really see what this game offers!
When loading into a match you are given tips on making a well rounded team composition which is really helpful! I would suggest for your first match just play who ever caters to your taste, and get used to the game before you start switching between the other 21 characters that Overwatch has to offer. After selecting your character, you will load into a purgatory of sorts until the match starts. The starting room has some destructible terrain to keep you enticed until the match begins. Match begins in 3, 2, 1.
Right out of the gate you are thrown into a vibrantly colored world with amazing shading and color saturation. The buildings and environmental detail are very appealing and matches the location they are trying to portray. The game play had me feeling some sort of way! I love the 6v6 team dynamic with the different objectives you have to complete from king of the hill, capture the point, and escorting the “payload”.
Overall I really love blizzards take on the classic FPS genre. The characters are well made and the skills they posses are powerful and really impactful, some more than others, but every character has their own reasons for being used. The maps are a little out of balance to me for the attacking or defending team respectively. And some characters are a must have in your team composition which is a little lame to me. That being said this was just the beta and who knows what else will be live when the game drops May, 24 2016! Needless to say I pre-ordered Overwatch and I will be logging many hours once it is officially released and I would defiantly suggest picking up the title for a fun and competitive 6v6 objective based FPS.
