The 2017 NBA All-Star game was supposed to be played in Charlotte, North Carolina next year, but that has changed because the league is protesting North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2 law, which is viewed as discriminatory against the LGBT community. While a new venue has not been announced by the league, basketball expert picks have narrowed down some of the potential new venues.
The NBA announced the decision to move the game last week, after waiting to see if there would be some changes made to the bill to make it more accommodating of LGBT people. Since the governor and lawmakers decided not to make any changes, the NBA decided to move the game to another state.
However, the league also announced it will try to reschedule the game in North Carolina for 2019. If the law hasn’t been changed by then, it is unlikely the game will be held there.
In the statement released by the league, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league was pulling out of North Carolina to honor the NBA’s values, which include non-discrimination, diversity, fairness, and the willingness to listen to opposing point of views.
The HB2 law, which was passed in March, made North Carolina the first state in the United States that required transgendered people to use bathrooms in public buildings that corresponds with the sex on their birth certificate, and not the gender they identify with.
After the law passed, commissioner Silver said the law was not consistent with the core values of the league, and the league would consider moving the All-Star game from North Carolina because of the new law.
By moving the All-Star game from the state, the NBA joins other entertainers that decided not to perform in North Carolina because of the law. People like Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Pearl Jam, Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, the Cirque du Soleil group, and Boston have all cancelled their appearances in North Carolina because of the bill.
Currently, the leading contender for the 2017 All-Star game is the city of New Orleans, but there are still other cities trying to host the game next year.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans said his city would gladly host the event because New Orleans is diverse, open, and inviting. He also said the people of the city pride themselves in their ability to host major sporting events, which they have successfully done in the past.
New Orleans was the host city for the All-Star game in 2008 and 2014, the city has also hosted the Super Bowl multiple times, most recently in 2002 and 2013.
Since the 2017 Mardi Gras starts on February 28, the city hosting the All-Star game won’t affect the festivities.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation also chimed in on the city potentially hosting the All-Star game. In a statement, the organization said the city has demonstrated on numerous occasions that is has the ability to successfully host some of the largest sporting events and celebrations in the world, and the organization will do anything it can to help the NBA, the Bensons, who own the New Orleans Pelicans and Saints, if called upon.
