Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has revealed that he currently believes Peter Capaldi will continue playing the Doctor beyond the end of the next season. Capaldi joined as the Twelfth Doctor in 2013 and Season 10 will be his third season in the role.
Matt Smith and David Tennant both played the Doctor for three full seasons, as did Peter Davison, Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy. Tom Baker remains the longest-serving (and best) Doctor, starring in 172 episodes over seven seasons.
Moffat told the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine: “I have no reason to suppose that I’m writing out a Doctor!”
He added: “Peter is loving the role, and long may he do so.”
