I write a lot about racism and discrimination in a continuous attempt to impress upon white people just how extreme racism is in America. Here’s a story that may take your understanding to the next level.
One of the most pathetic stories of 2017 is the Cold War Twitter fight between President Trump and the father of one of the UCLA basketball team players. The player (with two other teammates) was accused of stealing while in The People’s Republic of China. In such cases it is customary for the standing president to intervened. Trump purports to have done so and the player and his teammates were released.
It’s common knowledge with those who follow the sport that the father of one of the players, LaVar Ball, is known for living life through his son’s sports. Rumor has it that the kid is a super nice guy, and it’s the dad who’s a bit over the top. Apparently, he talks a lot of trash. But this story is not about either of them… at least not directly.
This story, as I said, is about racism in America.
Upon release from China, Trump didn’t feel that LaVar Ball, was thankful enough to him for his alleged intervention. So apparently, they’ve been going back and forth on Twitter. At the risk of dragging this out further, THAT is still not what this article is about!
When Trump’s supporters got involved things got ridiculous. You May wanna sit for this. Trump fans were outraged at the idea Mr. Ball wasn’t bowing down enough to their president. So, in true Trump fashion (pay close attention here), his supporters took to Twitter and began an all-out war on LeVar Burton. Yes you read that correctly. I did not say LaVar Ball, the father. The twitter feeds were coming from Trump followers to another black man named LeVar… Burton, who has absolutely nothing to do with the Ball family.
If you’ll note their last names both begin with a B and their first names are the same but spelled differently. This “mistake” shows complete and unadulterated ignorance called RACISM.
They can’t even tweet their racist comments to correct Black man. Presumably they are unable to differentiate between the two men. Ironically Levar Burton was not only a major character in Star Trek, The Next Generation, but he played Kunta Kinte, in the famous miniseries, Roots. So, Levar Burton has been receiving “hate” tweets from Trump supporters that are meant for “another” Black man. But not to worry, since they’re both Black and have the same first name I’m sure they must know each other, right?
