Boxing…it’s a sport I didn’t get into until I met my husband. At a first glance, many see boxing as a sport consisting of two guys, in a ring, “punching each other in the face”. It’s much more than that.
To my surprise, beginning 6 years ago, I fell in love with the sport. It started as I watched a boxing match the first time. The first time I saw a k.o., I was hooked. It was completely unexpected, came out of nowhere. I loved the flashes of the wife shouting in the crowd, or the mothers jumping in the air when a boxer(their son) landed a clean punch.
The more I watched the more I learned, boxing is a whole world within itself. It’s science, it’s politics, it’s competition, it’s family. It’s a sport that consists of fighters, who fight not only in the ring, but outside the ring too. It’s much deeper than meets the eye. Courage, competition, underdogs, commitment, friendship, is all part of what makes boxing so special.
Boxers fight because they love the sport, they love to compete, to push themselves past their own limits.
I’ve always been one who delves deep. Boxing…is deep. Choose a boxer, research where he comes from, his background. Many of the boxers we see on television, they’re not guys fighting just to fight. Many are fighting for their country, their families, their pain, a better life, to fight their weaknesses, to prove to themselves and the world, no matter their background, “I can be and I am, a champion.”
