Sad news to report. Kay Starr, who had a massive hit in the 1950’s with “Wheel Of Fortune” and “Rock And Wall Waltz” died yesterday at the age of 94 at her home in Los Angeles from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease, which was reported from by her daughter Katherine Yardley.
Ms. Starr, whose career began when she was a teenager and continued into her 80s, was a rarity: a singer who blossomed in the big-band era of the 1930s and 1940s, hit it big as a pop and country artist, and scored one of her biggest hits in the emerging rock scene of the mid-1950s.
It’s with great pleasure I’m writing about the Chicago Cubs big win against the Cleveland Indians with an 8-7 score in game seven, which lasted a grueling 10 innings. When Game seven was complete, the Cubs were the 2016 World Series champions for the 1st time since 1908! I’m not a huge Baseball fan and I typically don’t watch the sport, but I found the so called “Curse of the Billy Goat” both peculiar and honestly downright amusing. The curse was supposedly placed on the Cubs in 1945 by William Sianis after he brought his goat Murphy to the 1945 World Series between the Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. The stench of his goat was too much for fellow patrons and William was told he had to remove Murphy from the stadium. This enraged Sianis because he apparently bought two box seats one for himself the other for his beloved goat and was kicked out at the 4th inning.
“Recording with Billy May is like having a bucket of cold water thrown in your face.” — Frank Sinatra
No truer statement in terms of musical orchestration was ever spoken by the Chairman of the Board himself. Second in quality of collaboration only to fellow Sinatra sideman Nelson Riddle, all-around genius Billy May was considered the premiere arranger for the fast driving tempo of brassy big band orchestral arrangements, a legendary reputation he maintained until his untimely death at the age of eighty-seven in 2004.
Although Riddle outranks May slightly when looking at the number of albums they both made over the years with Frank Sinatra, the six projects Sinatra and May joined forces on in the years between the late 1950s and the late 1970s represent not only the pinnacle of May’s arranging for a vocalist, but perhaps the hardest swing-based music Sinatra recorded in his entire career.

Richard Ramirez was born on February 29, 1960 in El Paso Texas. He is known as the Night Stalker for terrorizing the city of Los Angeles and San Francisco in June 1984 until August 1985. He tortured and raped at least twenty five victims, killing at least thirteen of them. Ramirez died in prison on June 7, 2013 of complications from blood cancer and liver failure.
When Ramirez was a child he suffered two head injuries, one at just two years of age when a dresser fell on him leaving a gash on his forehead that required thirty stitches. When he was five he was knocked unconscious by a swing in a park. These head injuries certainly could have contributed to the monster Ramirez would grow up to become. Ramirez began smoking marijuana at the age of ten and when he was twelve he spent a lot of time with an older cousin who introduced him to Satanic worship.
Building on the success of Investigation Discovery’s (ID) acclaimed documentary series HATE IN AMERICA, the network announced, today – on the anniversary of the Shepard-Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act being signed into law – the launch of a new advocacy campaign, “Stop Hate in Your State”, to cast a spotlight on hate crimes and provide easy steps viewers can take to stop them. Approximately 250,000 hate crimes take place each year in the United States, but only 2% are reported to the FBI. Additionally, several states do not have comprehensive laws to cover all categories of hate crimes, and a handful of states do not have any hate crimes laws at all. Produced by NBC News’ award-winning production arm Peacock Productions, HATE IN AMERICA is hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist, Tony Harris, and investigates the troubling racial and ethnic divide in this country. Starting today, viewers can take action by going to www.investigationdiscovery.com/stophate to help ensure state agencies are reporting hate crimes and that all groups are protected by hate crimes laws.
The details of this column will appeal to both paranormal and boxing enthusiasts alike. My husband brought this story to my attention several weeks back, but I’ve sat on it trying to figure out how to do it the justice it deserves.
In the past I’ve written of charlatans and so called mediums and such, however a chap by the name of Curly Owen falls just outside of that circle in the amazing gift he brings to us. In the past, Curly Owen was known as a bare knuckle, hard spending and fast living sports figure. He was the sparring partner of the world-renowned Max Baer, the worlds heavyweight boxing champion. Owen was a promoter influential in putting live world boxing champions into the ring, close friend to many celebrities, a night club owner and a millionaire business man.
Browsing through my Apple Music account in the last few days brought forth the revelation of an album that I had long forgotten about, and wrongly so. I had first heard of the name Ronnie Deauville through a fellow standard lover’s list of favorite singers in early 2012, and after entering the name in iTunes, I could find only one album, the wistful “Smoke Dreams,” credited to his name. Though his short recording career would only consist of a number of big band singles as well as two full LP albums throughout the 1950s, Deauville’s career is notable both for the challenging and inspiring story that accompanied it, as well as the voice of the vocalist, a deep, rich baritone that seemed to be crafted out of pure silk.
