I recently made my yearly Christmas trek to the local mall. This is always an exciting time and I was greatly looking forward to a day of joy and merriment. Even the traffic can’t get me down as I listen to my favorite Christmas Carols in the car. Deck the halls with bows of holly…Fa la la la la, la la la la la.
I complete the one mile drive in record time this year; it only took me two hours and 45 minutes! Turning down the mall road, the first thing I notice is some nefarious pranksters have apparently been at work. Shame on them! The Mall billboard sign that normally reads: “Merry Christmas!” has been changed to “Honk if You’re Horny!” I turned up my car radio to drown out the cacophony of beeping horns around me. Tis the season to be jolly…Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Exhibiting and in certain instances offering up for sale the bits and pieces of ourselves which we deem palatable or marketable, we conceal in exchange just enough of our true selves behind smoke and mirrors so that there is something unique left over to reveal to that one special person for whom we, with the requisite mixture of vulnerability and anxiety, lift the veil, part the curtain, and step out beyond the footlights, awaiting some sort of final analysis and ultimate judgment in the way of rueful scorn and estrangement or else sober acceptance and communion.

He died beneath the boardwalk, looking with his one working eye toward the Atlantic, maybe at the clusters of stars with which little Tommy had recently become so infatuated, ushered peacefully away from his fleshly existence to the rhythmic recurrence of the ocean waves crashing and receding.
Not only was there a deficiency of ill will on the part of Jack Huston directed toward the creative team behind “Boardwalk Empire” for killing off his character who, for what it’s worth, transcended a simple three-episode story-arc playing a bizarre ancillary role to become a pivotal and memorable four season fan favorite, but the grateful actor wept at the poetic nature of Richard Harrow’s mortal demise in “Farewell Daddy Blues”, the finale of the show’s penultimate season.
