The Twilight Zone: “The Midnight Sun” (1961)
The thermometer in Norma’s New York City apartment reads 110 degrees. And that is with the air-conditioner chugging along at maximum capacity during the interim between the mandated brownouts, as the depleted gas, water, and electrical supplies are rationed out to the remaining citizens or cut off altogether with greater frequency. The radio announcer reports humidity levels of 91% and tomorrow’s forecast being simply “hot”. With a forlorn voice he is unable to disguise, he adds “More of the same, only hotter.” Departing from his script, he goes on to say that you will be able to fry eggs on sidewalks and boil soup in the ocean and are left to seek help from wandering maniacs.

Mega Riffs Vol 3: “Supernaut”
By Ian Murphy
In a repertoire literally jam-packed with killer riffs, English rockers Black Sabbath truly outdid themselves with this one. “Supernaut” brought the heaviness bar up more than a few levels. While not nearly as fat as “Mississippi Queen”, it actually defies gravity by also being cocaine-fueled mania turned into music. Never in my life have I heard a song that was this heavy, and this jubilant. Has there ever been a riff that was equal parts joy and aural brutality? No, I think not. Only Black Sabbath could do it.

Mega Riffs, Vol 2: “Mississippi Queen”
By Ian Murphy
If there were a contest for the World’s Fattest Riff, Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” would win, hands down. The guitar tone is so fat, it’s terminally obese. I mean, Walter “Piano Box Man” Hudson has nothing on this tune, although I am sure he’d approve of the edibility of the song.. This rib eye of a riff just smokes from the very beginning. Leslie West cooks up a killer tune here, and for a blues based song, it is crushingly heavy. The guitar is so loud in the mix that you hardly pay attention to anything else.

The Twilight Zone: Eye of the Beholder (1960)
We all maintain unique perspectives as to what we find aesthetically pleasurable or distasteful, repugnant or elegant, entertain our own preferences, predilections, or perversions. How easily and readily this thought process can be bifurcated is shameful, leaving no middle ground or grey area in which to challenge or overturn the societal standards which are far too often accepted literally at face value, treated and revered like holy scripture as though to discourage any further discussion, debate, or compromise.
