Singer Gregory Abbott Covers his Career – Music News

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
(Interview conducted in 2008)
“I really love boxing and have been a fan for a very long time!”–Gregory Abbott
In 1986 an album hit the record stores titled “Shake You Down” and the self titled track hit the musical airwaves as the first single. The singer with the silky smooth ala Marvin Gaye type of voice was Gregory Abbott coming out of your Hi Fi speakers. Armed with amazing vocal chops and matinee idol looks, you had the feeling success was going to come his way. Well, it did when Shake You Down, the single, hit the number one spot in 1987 on the Billboard charts and the album remained on the charts for some 27 weeks.
I can remember being stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Pensacola, Florida, in 1987, and Shake You Down was played in all the nightclubs. In fact, many a lady hit the floor with their dates and danced to Gregory in the background. I can remember sharing the floor with a lady or two and enjoying the music as well.
Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez, Tony Danza, Miller Lite Beer & More – Carlos Palomino Looks Back Part II

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
(Interview conducted in 2010)
Yesterday, in Part I of RSR’s exclusive interview, former WBC Welterweight Champion Carlos Palomino talked about what he is doing today, his rise up the ranks of the welterweight division, his title winning effort against then champion, John H. Stracey of England, his seven subsequent successful title defenses and lastly, his very close fight with Wilfred Benitez, which saw him lose his title via a split decision.
In Part II today, we hear Palomino talk about the current state of Wilfred Benitez, his comeback that saw him step through the ropes in his late 40’s, his poignant feelings about his late Father, Pablo Palomino, and finally, his thoughts on a myriad of boxing questions.
Laugh-In, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Golden Age of Hollywood – Gary Owens Chats

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
(Interview conducted in 2010)
“For me, just listening to my friend, Gary Owens, is a special pleasure. His easy and compelling voice is matched only by his easy and compelling wit.”— Shelley Berman
Growing up with a Father who was 40 years my senior was very unique because it enabled me to be exposed to things that I would truly appreciate later in life. One of them was the Old Hollywood that he grew up on and actually worked in. I can remember as a young child watching a show that Dad turned me on to called “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh In.”
On that show, there was a gentleman named “Gary Owens.” He had a gift…a voice that enunciated his words on a level that the legendary Director and Actor Orson Welles did. Both were commanding voices that made you listen. The voices were so distinctive that I always felt that you could close your eyes and know right away who they belonged to were in fact, his and Welles. Owens, who is well known for holding his right hand up to his right ear while speaking into a gimbaled boom microphone, adding to the appeal of Laugh-In that for that time, late 60’s – early 70’s was way ahead of its time.
The Sopranos, Edie Falco, Steven Van Zandt, Raging Bull, Acting and More: Robert Funaro Talks

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
(Interview conducted in 2007)
“I can remember as far back to the fights of guys like Muhammad Ali, Jerry Quarry, and Joe Frazier who when they were boxing, I was always trying to catch them on TV.”–Robert Funaro
Italian American actor Robert Funaro is a born and bred New Yorker who wears it like a brand new pair of diamond cufflinks. His works screams NYC. His voice echoes Brooklyn. His passion for his work is unmatched. He uses boxing throughout his various analogies about his acting career because he realizes that as he plies his trade day in and day out, he is like a boxer. The boxer goes to the gym. The actor to the studio. Both work themselves to the bone to win the championship in their craft.
James Gandolfini, The Sopranos and More: Joseph R. Gannascoli Talks

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
(Interview conducted in 2007)
“I actually cried as so many did when The Greatest (Muhammad Ali) lost.” –Joseph R. Gannascoli
Joseph R. Gannascoli is a Brooklyn, New York, born and raised actor who has plied his trade for many years in some well known movies, but hit pay dirt, as Mafia Capo Vito Spatafore, a tough guy character that is found out to be gay in the HBO Hit Original Series, The Sopranos. Before he became a truly famous face, he had parts in movies such as Ed Wood with Johnny Depp, Mickey Blue Eyes with Hugh Grant, and maybe one of the most famous actors to play a mafia figure in James Caan, (Sonny Corleone in The Godfather).
When you look at Gannascoli’s resume, you see a guy who has worked his way up in each movie role with small parts leading of course, into bigger ones. Acting, in a sense, is no different than boxing. Both the boxer and actor must start out small working their way up the ranks. The Actor starts with smaller roles, the fighter in smaller venues, working his way through lesser competition. So in that sense, an actor such as Joe, who if he wins the Oscar one day, is like the boxer winning his first legitimate World Title. Exciting for both, no doubt, and for sure a milestone that can passed on to generations in their families.

Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Boxing & MORE: Joel Gilbert Goes on the Record

Exclusive Interview by Geno McGahee
(Interview conducted in 2011)
“It appears that Floyd Mayweather, JR., has lost interest in facing any stiff competition. His biggest challenges right now seem to be the IRS and the Las Vegas Police Department.” – Joel Gilbert
In 1999, I went to go see THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and a lot of hype surrounded it. Many contended that it was real footage and that those involved were, in fact, dead. Although I knew it was all nonsense, I allowed myself to believe in the story and it became a really fun experience. Over ten years later, I have had the same experience with PAUL MCCARTNEY REALLY IS DEAD: THE LAST TESTAMENT OF GEORGE HARRISON.
Investigation Discovery Explores Whether the Sun has Set on the Exclusionary Practice of Sundown Towns in Modern – Day America

Don’t let the sun set on you in a sundown town. That’s what signs at the city limits of all-white communities warned when African-Americans were not allowed to live there or even visit after the sun set. This method of exclusion was often held by an official policy or restrictive covenant-. The practice of excluding blacks from American towns was so prevalent that, by 1936, it became the impetus for Harlem civic leader Victor Green to pen the Negro Motorist Green-Book, a guide designed to help African-American travelers avoid places where they could be harassed, threatened, or even killed. Today, it is illegal for sundown towns to exist on paper due to the 1968 Fair Housing Act, but some believe that communities remain sundown by reputation and reluctance to diversify. In the fourth installment of Investigation Discovery’s Black History Month anthology THE INJUSTICE FILES, filmmaker Keith Beauchamp takes a cross-country road trip to explore whether these exclusionary practices still exist today. Produced exclusively for Investigation Discovery by Al Roker Entertainment, THE INJUSTICE FILES: SUNDOWN TOWNS one-hour special premieres Monday, February 24 at 8/7c.

William “Bunny Rugs” Clarke Dies at 65: Cause of Death Revealed

By “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
Reggae singer William “Bunny Rugs” Clarke who was also the lead singer of the popular group Third World died yesterday at age 65 of Leukemia at his home in Florida.
Third World had several hits on the charts, but my personal favorite was “SENSE OF PURPOSE”. In 1985, I use to go a teenage nightclub, called Breaking Away, in a town called Brewster, in New York, almost every weekend.
The DJ would play “SENSE OF PURPOSE” and the entire club, including myself, would get up and dance to this great track. To this day, I still have it on wax in my record collection.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Clarke family in their time of grief…

Good Times, Norman Lear, Mike Tyson and Lots More: Bern Nadette Stanis Stops By

Exclusive Interview by “Bad” Brad Berkwitt
(Interview conducted in 2008)
“To this day, I hear or receive emails from people who say they raised their kids on Good Times or I want my little girl to watch Thelma because I liked the way that she was. To hear that, truly is an honor.”–Bern Nadette Stanis
About a year ago, I did my last interview for RSR and I would be remiss if I didn’t say, I truly missed doing them. Well, as Austin Powers had to do, I also found my “Mojo” and sought out someone I feel not only would be interesting, but without any doubts, could share a lot with the RSR readers on their career and the sport of boxing that our readers truly love…
In reaching out to Bern Nadette Stanis who played the very popular “Thelma Evans” on the 1970’s comedy sitcom, “Good Times,” which I was able to do through her website, which we will talk about later on in the interview, I found a lady who was not only extremely articulate, but truly passionate about her craft which she has been involved with for many years.
